See What We Can See: a reflective journey around the North East
"We'll take our favourite bag with us, and see what we can see," my beloved father said one sunny day in the July of 1999, three days into our family holiday in Devon.
It was an expression that had been used multiple times that trip, in an effort to enthuse two young children about the idea of walking up the next hill, or going to find the next museum. As we put on walking boots and anoraks, he would dream out loud about the adventures that we were going to have that day; as he encouraged the two youngsters out the door and away from the television, he would insist that this day, spent outdoors, was going to be the funnest day ever.
Somehow, it worked - and twenty years later, that sense of adventure and curiosity has not left me. Now based in the North East of the UK, I love nothing more than getting my walking boots on and heading out the door on a wander (very different from a walk - a wander has no planned direction or purpose, other than to "see what we can see").
I'm Heather - the author of See What We Can See - and I would love you to join me for a wander around the beautiful North East. Join our adventurer friend as she visits key spots across the region - from the Angel of the North, to the coast, to the bridges and more, before returning back home - each giving the opportunity for children to reflect on key topics and issues.
At the coast, we look out to the horizon and we think about our hopes and dreams for the future; at the park, we reflect on the fun and joy that life brings. We'll visit the bridges and reflect on what it means to build bridges with people and after all of that and loads more, we will return home and remember what makes home so special for us.
This book is amazing for children aged 4-7, and can be completed with grown-ups or on their own. Each place has questions, activities and chances to stop and reflect - we recommend finding a special pen to go through the book with!
Come and join us for our adventure - we can't wait to see you!
